His eyes are as dark as the depths of space. His smile sheds rainbows. And, his coldness melts when he falls in love. He is John Quinn.

Quinn in the Night World series.
One of the most dangerous vampires in all the Night World...

Quinn makes appearances in more than one Night World book, therefore, I shall summarise his purpose in each of the Night World books he appears in to give you a complete picture of his story in this series.

* Quinn physically appears in the following books – Daughters of Darkness, The Chosen, and Soulmate, while he is last mentioned in the book after Soulmate, titled Huntress.

Quinn in Daughters of Darkness:

Quinn first enters the Night World series in the second book, titled Daughters of Darkness. Daughters of Darkness is about three Redfern sisters – Jade, Kestrel, and Rowan – who run away from the Night World island they have lived on their whole life because they want to experience what it is like living in a world with humans and without being bound by Night World laws.

In the Night World series, the Redfern family are considered royalty to the vampires of the Night World. This is because they are the direct descendents of the first vampire ever, Maya. Maya became a vampire by casting a spell for immortality. She then gave birth to a child called Red Fern. Red Fern became the first lamia vampire; this means he was the first vampire to be able to have children who would also be vampires.

Because of their ‘celebrity status’ in the Night World, when Jade, Kestrel, and Rowan run away from the island they live on, Ash Redfern, their older brother, is quietly appointed to track them down and take them home before the sisters can break any laws and before their running away can reflect badly upon the Redfern family. Someone else is aware of the Redfern runaways however. Ash is staying with Quinn when he receives the call about his sisters.

In Daughters of Darkness, Quinn is described as being a made-vampire (made by a Redfern but which Redfern made him is not mentioned) who thinks humans are cunning vermin and who does not tolerate breaking of Night World law. Ash tells Quinn of his sisters running away because he believes Quinn, being a powerful telepath, would have figured out the news anyway.

Quinn wants to report the runaways to the Night World Council instead of letting Ash handle the situation because he wants this incident thoroughly investigated for any breach of Night World law. Ash convinces Quinn to let him handle the situation and at the end of the book, Ash is able to sway Quinn into thinking the issue has been resolved, with all those who broke Night World law being punished.

Quinn drops the issue but what he does not know is that Ash, whilst on the ‘hunt’ for his sisters, discovered he has a human soulmate. Ash, in fact, keeps this secret from the entire Redfern family except his sisters, who are friends with his soulmate. Quinn, unaware that the soulmate principle is suddenly coming into effect for Night Worlders, next appears in the fifth Night World book, The Chosen.

Quinn in The Chosen:

The next appearance of Quinn is in this book. I will go over the important parts of The Chosen concerning Quinn now but a detailed summary of the book can be found here.

Quinn is still the human-hating stickler for Night World law that he was in Daughters of Darkness. This changes though, when one night, he is caught by a vampire hunter. The vampire hunter, instead of killing him, converses with him. Quinn is surprised when he reiterates his past to his capturer. But the vampire hunter becomes too curious, asking too many questions, setting Quinn off.

He begins to fight with the vampire hunter until they make skin-to-skin contact. In that moment of contact, they feel a connection between them. The connection is broken suddenly when more vampire hunters confront Quinn. Quinn is able to get away but he remains puzzled by the ‘girl’. She brings back old feelings in him, feelings he has not felt since he had been human. Since Dove Redfern – his old lover – had been alive.

Quinn shakes himself from his daze, thinking the connection with the ‘girl’ was a one-off. He takes on a job to capture girls for a vampires’ blood feast. Quinn finds one of the girls he ‘chooses’ barely irresistible and later, he learns that that girl, Rashel Jordan, is the vampire hunter he’d met a couple of nights ago. Time and again Rashel tries to conjure up the will to kill him but for some reason she can’t until finally Quinn tells her she has to do it, or else, he’ll have to kill her and this way would be better than the other.

Rashel still is not able to kill him and eventually, they both come to realise they love each other. Long story short, Quinn gives up the Night World and his ties with the Redfern family – with his adopted father, Hunter Redfern, in particular – to be with Rashel. At the end of The Chosen, Rashel hints that they may become Circle Daybreakers.

Appearances and mentions after The Chosen:

Quinn’s next appearance, in Soulmate, the sixth Night World book, is minuscule. He and Rashel, along with many of the other characters of the previous Night World books, come together for a discussion.

Though Quinn does not physically appear in Huntress, the book after Soulmate, it is confirmed in this book that he and Rashel have joined forces with Circle Daybreak. They are doing work for the circle, work that involves rescuing people targeted by the Night World and keeping them safe.

After Huntress, Quinn and Rashel are not mentioned in the following books. There is a possibility that L. J. Smith will let readers know what will happen to Quinn and Rashel, as well as the other couples of the Night World series, in the last book of the series, titled Strange Fate. Its publication is expected soon.
