His eyes are as dark as the depths of space. His smile sheds rainbows. And, his coldness melts when he falls in love. He is John Quinn.

A brief profile of Quinn.
He was Quinn, the essence of darkness...

Want a quick sum-up of Quinn? Below is a profile of him containing basic facts.

His full name and nicknames:

His full name is John Quinn but only his soulmate – Rashel Jordan – calls him by his first name. This is because people are either too afraid to call Quinn by his first name or they just do not know what his first name is.

As for nicknames, L. J. Smith does not refer to any specific nickname for Quinn in the Night World books, but he has been referred to as ‘Quinn the dreadful’ and ‘Quinn, that snake’ by some.

His species:

Quinn is a made-vampire. He was made a vampire in the year 1639 by a prominent lamia vampire named Hunter Redfern because Quinn wanted to marry Hunter’s youngest daughter, Dove Redfern. When Quinn asked the man for his daughter’s hand in marriage, Hunter ‘showed’ Quinn the Redfern family’s ‘secret’.

His year of birth/his age:

Quinn was born in 1621. He was eighteen years old in 1639, the year he was made a vampire. The made-vampires of the Night World series stop aging as soon as they become a vampire, therefore, Quinn may appear to be no older than eighteen but he is actually three-hundred and seventy-six years old at the time The Chosen was published. (The book was published in 1997, so I subtracted 1621 from 1997.)

Place where he grew up:

Quinn grew up in Charlestown, located in Boston, Massachusetts, U. S. A. Boston was a developing area back in the sixteen-hundreds, consisting of hills, dense forest, clean beaches surrounded by salt meadows, and only a handful of houses with thatched roofs.

His appearance:

Quinn, as mentioned above, still appears to be eighteen years old. He has a lithe, compact body but is not very tall. His features are strongly chiselled yet still appearing delicate. He has black hair and black eyes, with pale white skin. Rashel describes his smile as beautiful, with a laugh that ‘sheds rainbows’.

Night World books he appears in:

The fifth Night World book, titled The Chosen, is the book that gives the most information about Quinn and his life. It is also the book in which Quinn finds his soulmate. Quinn also makes brief appearances in Daughters of Darkness and Soulmate, the second and sixth books in the Night World series, respectively.

Summary of his story in the Night World series:

Quinn was a human living in the mid-sixteen-hundreds in the developing Boston area when he was made a vampire by his lover’s father – Hunter Redfern. Quinn came from a poor, religious family. His father was a minister at the local church and when he discovered that his son and the Redferns were vampires, Quinn’s father killed Dove Redfern (Quinn’s lover) and tried to kill his own son. From that day onward, Quinn hates humans. He believes they will never accept him as a vampire, so he becomes merciless towards them.

Of course, all this changes when Quinn meets Rashel Jordan, a human vampire hunter who despises vampires as much as Quinn despises humans. After several strange encounters, it is evident to the two that they share a connection. Quinn refuses to believe he has fallen in love with a human but he finally comes to accept that fact. Rashel, to Quinn, has all the qualities he’s never witnessed in a human. She has strength, honour, and compassion.

But Quinn, famous among the Night World for being a stickler for Night World law, decides he will transform Rashel into a vampire. Just as he is in the process of doing so, his mind connects with Rashel’s and he discovers why she has loathed vampires; because her mother was killed by one. Quinn reforms to accept Rashel as she is. He also gives up the Night World to be with his soulmate.

His family:

Quinn’s natural family included his father and his mother. Quinn may have had siblings but it was never mentioned. Assuming that all of his biological family members remained human, they would have died centuries ago.

After becoming a vampire, Quinn was considered the adopted son of Hunter, since Hunter didn’t have any sons of his own to become his heir. Their father-son relationship ended towards the end of The Chosen however, when Quinn chooses to be with his human soulmate.

Quinn was never married (not even to Dove) and though he may marry Rashel, he will not be able to have any children of his own; a consequence of being a made-vampire.

His soulmate:

Quinn’s soulmate is Rashel. Some people may think Quinn had two soulmates; Dove being the other. This is up to the individual but I personally think that Quinn only has one soulmate and that it is Rashel. My reason for thinking this is simple. You can only have one soulmate, so, if Dove died, she and Quinn were not meant for each other.

Currently in the Night World series:

Quinn and Rashel are working with Circle Daybreak. They are the fighting arm of the organisation.
