INTRODUCTION |
SPECIES. In Witchlight, a dragon known as Azhdeha was the first to be awakened since dragons were first put to sleep. Azhdeha was hired by the Night World Council to hunt down the third Wild Power, Iliana Dominick. Iliana used blue fire to kill Azhdeha but not before he gave renegade shape-shifters the command to kill the Crone of the witches, Edgith Harman. The strength of a dragon depends on how many horns it has on its forehead. The more horns present, the more powerful a dragon is. An average dragon has no more than three horns while a powerful dragon like Azhdeha can have as many as five. The way to kill a dragon is by removing all the horns present on their forehead. When all the horns of a dragon have been removed, it is no longer immortal. Azhdeha had a unique human form and a dragon form but he also had the ability to enter and control the body of another person. Dragons are the only shape-shifters able to send out black energy. They also have the power of telepathy. <-- Back. Humans: Humans who have a Night Person as their soulmate, usually join Circle Daybreak. Some humans who know about the Night World include Rashel Jordan and Hannah Snow. Hannah Snow is a different type of human, known as an old soul. Some humans become vampire hunters. <-- Back. Lamia vampires: All lamia vampires have descended from Red Fern, the son of Maya, the ancestress of all vampires. Because of this, lamia vampires have greater potential to be more powerful than made vampires because they are the direct descendents of Maya. (Every vampire after Maya, born or made, has a bit of her blood. Her direct descendents though, have her blood in a less diluted fashion than made vampires.) In the Night World series, each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and lamia vampires are symbolised by a black iris. The most famous lamia vampire family in the Night World series is the Redfern family. <-- Back. Leopards: Panthers are leopards with black fur. Like all other shape-shifters, leopards are governed by the First House. Galen Drache, the Prince of the First House, chose the leopard as his animal to call in Witchlight. <-- Back. Lost witches: A lost witch who finds out about their heritage and tries to use their powers may have difficulty working with the art. Iliana Dominick was a lost witch who refused to believe she came from a family of prominent witches until she was confronted by a powerful dragon called Azhdeha. When Azhdeha began attacking her friends, only then was Iliana able to awake the Wild Power within her witch blood. During the fight with Azhdeha, Iliana received guidance from the Witch Queen, Hecate, who has been dead for thousands of years. Another lost witch in the Night World series is Poppy North. She found out that she was a specific type of lost witch, known as a psychic. Being a psychic, Poppy has excellent telepathic abilities. <-- Back. Made vampires: Converting a human to a vampire without obtaining permission from the Night World Council is illegal. Night People who do this can be punished. In the Night World series, each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and made vampires are symbolised by a black rose. The two most famous made vampires in the Night World series are Thierry Descouedres and John Quinn. <-- Back. Old souls: Sometimes, an old soul may be born with identical appearances or even remember previous lifetimes. If an old soul is made into a vampire, they cannot be reincarnated anymore. Hannah Snow is an old soul. She has been around since the beginning of time. <-- Back. Other creatures of darkness: A ghoul starts out as a human who then exchanges blood with a vampire. However, as their body begins to transform, the human does not receive enough vampire blood to complete the change. Instead, they convert into the walking un-dead. They become brainless and hunt for only one thing; human blood. They also start decaying and smelling. A ghoul cannot survive for more than a few weeks because their body just degenerates. Miss Emma – the nanny of James Rasmussen – became a ghoul. <-- Back. Panthers: One panther in particular is Raksha Keller, a Circle Daybreaker who discovered her soulmate was the Prince of the First House, Galen Drache. They were engaged to each other in Witchlight. <-- Back. Shape-shifters: All shape-shifters have the senses of the animal they call, which are often extraordinary. They can smell differences between foods, feel things many times the intensity than humans, and can hear both higher and lower pitches. They also have excellent night vision. All shape-shifters are governed by the First House of the Shape-shifters. Some famous shape-shifters from the Night World books include Jeremy Lovett, Galen Drache, Raksha Keller, and Azhdeha. In the Night World series, the shape-shifters are treated like second-class citizens by the vampires and witches. The reason for this is explained in Witchlight. Over thirty thousand years ago, the ancient dragons succeeded in their attempt to destroy the first world because they did not want witches to gain control of the world. <-- Back. True witches: Some famous witches that know the art well include Thea Harman and Blaise Harman. <-- Back. Vampires: Vampires run faster, see better, and even hear better than humans. They can also control minds, even erase memory. Sunlight however, inhibits all vampire powers, especially in newly-made vampires. Vampires need blood to survive. Quite simply, drinking more blood means being more powerful. There are two types of vampires in the Night World. Lamia vampires are the vampires who were born as vampires. Made vampires are the ones who were born human but were bitten by a vampire. All vampires are governed by the Night World Council. Some famous vampires from the Night World books include Ash Redfern, Maya, Hunter Redfern, and of course, John Quinn. <-- Back. Werewolves: Werewolves dislike silver and fire. Both can kill them. In the Night World series, each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and werewolves are symbolised by a black foxglove. Like all other shape-shifters, werewolves are governed by the First House. Jeremy Lovett was a renegade werewolf living in Briar Creek, Oregon. He was killed – among other reasons – for breaking Night World law. <-- Back. Witches: There are two types of witches in the Night World series. Those witches that know their heritage and practise the art are said to be true witches. Those witches that do not know their heritage and thus do not practise the art because they do not know they have the power to do so are called lost witches. In the Night World series, each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and witches are symbolised by a black dahlia. Recently in the series, most of the witches seceded from the Night World. Many followed their Maiden, Mother, and Crone and joined a Circle called Circle Daybreak. Only the darkest witches of Circle Midnight still belong to the Night World. These witches no longer answer to the Inner Circle; they are governed by the Night World Council. The Harman family is the most prominent family of witches in the Night World. <-- Back. |
