Species.

Humans:

Humans are the creatures that live amid the Night World. Most humans know nothing about the Night World or Night People. But some find out. Night World laws state that if a human finds out about the Night World they must be killed. Night People who are finding human soulmates are joining Circle Daybreak. Some humans become vampire hunters and some humans are old souls.

Old souls:

Humans who have been reincarnated are known as old souls. Old souls are not immortal. They are able to die during their current life but are born again during a different period of time as a different person. An old soul may be reborn with similar appearance or even remember previous lifetimes. If an old soul becomes a vampire they cannot be reincarnated. Hannah Snow is an old soul who has been reincarnated over a span of thirty thousand years.

Other creatures of darkness:

Vampires, witches and shape-shifters are not the only creatures of the Night World. Ghouls are another type of species that exist. A ghoul is a human who exchanges blood with a vampire but does not receive enough blood to complete the transformation to being a vampire. Ghouls become brainless and hunt only for human blood. They start smelling and decaying and only survive for a few weeks. James Rasmussen had a nanny named Miss Emma who became a ghoul.

Shape-shifters:

Shape-shifters are Night People who can shape-shift back and forth between their human form and their animal form. The most powerful shape-shifters are the dragons. Other shape-shifters include werewolves, panthers and leopards. All shape-shifters have the senses of the animal they call. They can smell differences between foods, feel things many times the intensity than humans can and can hear both high and low pitches. They also have excellent night vision. In the Night World series shape-shifters are treated like second-class citizens by vampires and witches. The reason for this is explained in Witchlight. Over thirty thousand years ago the dragons succeeded in their attempt to destroy the first world because they did not want witches to gain control of the world. In the second world witches used spells to put the dragons to sleep, considering them too evil to be left untamed. All shape-shifters are governed by the First House. The Drache family forms the First House. They are descendants of a dragon princess and possess some extra ordinary powers. They have the ability to communicate via telepathy with other animals. They also have the option to choose which animal they would like to call.

Dragons:

The dragons are the oldest and most powerful of the shape-shifters. They were put to sleep a long time ago by witches because they were considered too evil and destructive. Since the dragons were put to sleep the First House has been commanding the shape-shifters of the Night World. The strength of a dragon depends on how many horns it has on its forehead. More horns means more power. An average dragon has no more than three horns while a very powerful dragon can have as many as five. The way to kill a dragon is by removing all the horns present on its forehead. When all the horns of a dragon have been removed it is no longer immortal. Dragons are the only shape-shifters able to send out black energy. They also have the power of telepathy. In Witchlight a dragon named Azhdeha was awakened by a witch hired by the Night World Council. Azhdeha had a human form and a dragon form but he also had the ability to enter and control the bodies of other people.

Leopards:

Leopards are shape-shifters that can shape-shift back and forth between their human form and their feline form. Leopards have extraordinary night vision and exceptional hearing. Panthers are leopards with black fur. Galen Drache, the prince of the First House, chose the leopard as his animal form in Witchlight. All shape-shifters are governed by the First House.

Panthers:

Panthers are leopards (shape-shifters) with black fur. Raksha Keller is a panther who was assigned a mission in Witchlight to find the third Wild Power. It was in this book that Raksha fell in love with the prince of the First House, Galen Drache. The two were promised to each other at the end of the book. All shape-shifters are governed by the First House.

Werewolves:

Werewolves are shape-shifters that can shape-shift back and forth between their human form and their wolf form. Werewolves dislike silver and fire. Both can kill them. When werewolves hunt they eat the internal organs of humans such as the heart and liver. For this reason Night World laws specifically state werewolves may only hunt and kill other animals. Werewolves who disregard this law are considered renegades and Night People have the right to kill them. Jeremy Lovett was a renegade werewolf who was killed in Daughters of Darkness, among other reasons, for hunting humans. All shape-shifters are governed by the First House. Each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and werewolves are symbolised by a foxglove.

Vampires:

Vampires are powerful blood-sucking immortals that can heal from any injury except those inflicted by wood. Wood can seriously harm and even kill them. Burning is also deadly to them. Vampires run faster, see better and even hear better than humans. They can also control minds, even erase memory. Sunlight inhibits all vampire powers, especially in newly made vampires. Vampires need blood to survive. Quite simply, drinking more blood means being more powerful. There are two types of vampires in the Night World series. Lamia vampires are the born vampires and made vampires were humans that were turned into vampires by other vampires. The vampire species started with Maya who found a spell for immortality. Maya discovered she was more powerful and immune to death but needed fresh blood to sustain herself. Maya used another spell to have a son named Red Fern who became the first lamia vampire. He is the ancestor of the Redfern family who are considered royalty to the vampires of the Night World. Maya was staked to death in Soulmate after having lived for almost thirty thousand years. Hunter Redfern was the oldest living Redfern until his death in Black Dawn. Vampires are governed by the Night World Council. A vampire needs to obtain permission from the Council before turning a human into a vampire.

Lamia vampires:

Lamia vampires are the born vampires. They have a couple of advantages over made vampires such as the ability to grow to whatever age they like. This means they can choose when they want to stop growing. Lamia vampires can also have children. All lamia vampires have descended from Red Fern, the son of the first vampire ever, Maya. Lamia vampires, especially the Redfern family, have potential to be more powerful than made vampires because they are the direct descendents of Maya. (Every vampire after Maya, born or made, has a bit of her blood. Her direct descendents have her blood in less diluted form than made vampires.) The Night World Council governs the vampires of the Night World. Some lamia vampires are trusted enough to become elders. Each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and lamia vampires are symbolised by an iris.

Made vampires:

A made vampire was a human who was bitten by a vampire and has exchanged blood with that vampire. In the Night World series only young humans can be transformed into vampires. Older humans cannot make the change. Transformation can take three days and made vampires stop growing as soon as they become fully vampire. They are unable to have children. Thierry Descouedres was the first made vampire and because of this he is titled the lord of the Night World. The Night World Council governs vampires and turning a human into a vampire without permission from the Council is illegal. Night People who do this can be punished with death. Each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and made vampires are symbolised by a rose.

Witches:

The witches of the Night World are humans with special powers in their blood. Witches practise the art of witchcraft. They use herbs, crystals, candles and other equipment to cast spells. There are two types of witches in the Night World series. The first type are those that know their heritage and practise the art fluently. The second type are the lost witches. These witches have not grown up knowing their heritage and thus never practise the art or have difficulty doing so. The witch species started with Hecate. Her daughter Hellewise Hearth Woman also had children who are the Harman descendants. Harman witches are considered royalty to other witches because of their direct connection to Hecate and Hellewise. The witches of the Night World are governed by the Inner Circle which consists of respected members of the witch community. Maiden, mother and crone are the three highest ranking positions of the Inner Circle. The crone of the witches is Edgith Harman who was the oldest living Harman until her death in Witchlight. After her death the mother of the witches became leader. Most witches seceded from the Night World at the end of Black Dawn, joining Circle Daybreak. Only the darkest witches of Circle Midnight still take direction from the Night World Council. Each species of the Night World has a flower as their symbol and witches are symbolised by a dahlia.

Lost witches:

Lost witches grow up not knowing their heritage and thus do not practise the art of witchcraft. A lost witch who finds out about their heritage and tries to use their powers may have difficulty working with the art. Iliana Dominick is a lost Harman witch who discovered her heritage in Witchlight. Iliana received guidance from her ancestress Hecate, who has been dead for thousands of years, regarding her powers. Poppy North is another lost witch. Poppy discovered she was psychic in Secret Vampire. Psychics have excellent telepathic abilities.
