Timeline of significant Night World events.

The first world is destroyed by fire:

Night World legends say there existed three worlds before the world that exists now. Thirty thousand years ago the first world was ruled by shape-shifters. During this time humans were too afraid to come out of their caves. Instead, in some parts of the world they considered the shape-shifters to be gods. In other parts of the world however the shape-shifters treated humans like humans treat cattle. In Witchlight Galen Drache reminisces of how brutally the shape-shifters treated humans in this world. The witches were displeased by how ruthless the shape-shifters were becoming. Hecate, the Witch Queen, convinced the witches of the first world to fight the dragons. The shape-shifters did not want the witches to take control over the world so they used magic to set off volcanoes. After ten thousand years of shape-shifter rule fiery eruptions destroyed the first world.

The witches put the dragons to sleep in the second world:

While the second world was being established the witches used spells to put the most powerful shape-shifters – the dragons – to sleep. They buried the dragons in the deepest places of the earth. The witches considered dragons too evil to be left alive. Only one dragon was allowed to live. This dragon was a baby princess too weak to pose a threat to the witches. The Drache family have descended from this dragon. The witches controlled the second world until a new species threatened their dominance.

The first vampire:

A witch named Maya Hearth Woman found the spell for immortality. She carried out the spell and consequently became the first vampire. Considering herself far more superior to any witch, Maya proliferated her species by attacking witches of her former tribe.

Maya and Hellewise fight:

Hellewise Hearth Woman challenged her twin sister Maya to a duel on the condition that if Maya lost, her and her vampire disciples would stop attacking local witches. Hellewise won the duel and drove her sister out of the village. Hellewise later died of the wounds inflicted during the duel.

Night Wars; the vampires versus the witches:

The vampire race increased rapidly allowing them to carry out a brazen attack on the witches for control of the world. The witches were too busy fighting off attacks to do anything about the ice age when it began. Plant and animal life started dying and inevitably ice destroyed the second world. When the third world came about vampires seised control.

The third world is destroyed by a universal flood:

The vampires controlled the third world for almost ten thousand years when floods started occurring. The world was destroyed when the floods reached universal proportions.

In the fourth world Night People go into hiding:

When the fourth world was established humans took control. By now there were too many humans for Night People to overthrow so they went into hiding. They decided to keep their existence a secret. Hence, the Night World came about. The Old Powers – the forces of nature that were behind the natural disasters that occurred in the previous three worlds – fall asleep.

A truce between the vampires and the witches:

Since the Night Wars the witches and the vampires have despised each other but when Hunter Redfern has trouble conceiving more children he enlists the help of a witch named Maeve Harman. To secure her help Hunter declares an end to the atrocities between the two species.

Circle Daybreak is established:

I have no idea when Circle Daybreak was established by Thierry Descouedres but I do know that Circle Daybreak already exists when Maya dies. Edgith Harman was involved in establishing the organisation. Because Edgith was not born when Hunter Redfern declared unity between vampires and witches it makes sense to place this event here.

Maya dies:

The first legendary vampire dies when she is staked by a human.

A period of darkness is prophesised:

In the Night World series the approaching millennium will mark ten thousand years of human rule. The Night World Council digs up a prophecy that predicts a period of darkness is coming. This darkness will destroy the human world. The humans have been given a fighting chance though. Seventeen years ago four children were born with the power of blue fire in their blood. If all four Wild Powers can work together now they can banish the darkness. The race is on. The Council and Circle Daybreak begin searching for the Wild Powers for opposite reasons. The Council wants to obliterate the Wild Powers because they want the darkness to take over and destroy the human race. Night People have sensed the Old Powers have awakened again. They believe the Old Powers are responsible for the chaos currently occurring in the world. Part of the chaos is the return of the soulmate principle which is seeing Night People finding human soulmates.

The first Wild Power sides with Circle Daybreak:

Jez Redfern is the first Wild Power. She is discovered in Huntress. Jez is already working for Circle Daybreak. In fact, they gave her the mission to find the first Wild Power. What nobody realised until the end of the book was that Jez herself was the Wild Power. Consequently, Jez did not need any convincing to side with the peaceful organisation.

The witches secede from the Night World:

In Black Dawn we learn the witches have seceded from the Night World because they do not want to take part in destroying the human world. Only the darkest witches who despise humans remain loyal to the Night World Council.

The vampire patriarch of the Night World dies:

Hunter Redfern dies at the end of Black Dawn. Hunter was said to have practically controlled the Night World Council. He was also possibly the oldest Redfern alive. When Hunter learned that his great-grandson Delos Redfern was one of the four Wild Powers Hunter swayed Delos into joining forces with him to destroy the human world. But when Delos decided humans have as much right to live as Night People Hunter planned to have Delos killed so that the Wild Power prophecy stating ‘four less one and darkness triumphs’ would be fulfilled. Delos used his Wild Power on Hunter who vanished without a trace.

The second Wild Power sides with Circle Daybreak:

The second Wild Power is Delos Redfern. He is discovered in Black Dawn. Delos actually planned to help destroy the human world during the millennium but his human soulmate succeeded in making Delos realise humans are people who deserve to live too. The blind maiden of the witches helps convince Delos to side with Circle Daybreak.

The first dragon is awakened in thirty thousand years:

In their desperate attempt the Night World Council hire a witch to break the spell that put the dragons to sleep. A dragon named Azhdeha is awakened. He is ordered to capture the third Wild Power – Iliana Dominick – at any cost. Iliana destroys Azhdeha with her Wild Power in Witchlight but not before the dragon encourages renegade shape-shifters to create chaos to disrupt the impending alliance between the witches and the shape-shifters. There is much controversy among Circle Daybreak witches about the identity of the witch powerful enough to break an ancient spell and why she would betray her own species.

The oldest Harman witch dies:

Before Iliana Dominick could destroy the dragon Azhdeha he encouraged renegade shape-shifters to create chaos to disrupt the impending alliance between the witches and the shape-shifters. A group of rogue werewolves and a tiger are responsible for attacking and killing the crone of the witches – Edgith Harman – outside of her witchcraft supplies store in Las Vegas. The witches are furious at her death and this creates doubt regarding the alliance.

The third Wild Power sides with Circle Daybreak:

The third Wild Power is Iliana Dominick, a lost Harman witch. It took some work for Circle Daybreak agents to convince this delicate flower she has blue fire running through her veins.

The witches and the shape-shifters join forces:

The last significant event to occur in the Night World series takes place at the end of Witchlight. This is the alliance between the witches and the shape-shifters. These two species have not lived in harmony since the witches put the most powerful of the shape-shifters – the dragons – to sleep thirty thousand years ago. Now, to convince the shape-shifters to join forces with them in protecting the human world the witches offer Iliana Dominick – the Witch Child and a Wild Power – to the prince of the First House of the shape-shifters, Galen Drache. Galen loves someone else though and Iliana knows this so she performs a blood-tie ceremony with Raksha Keller, the shape-shifter Galen loves. Both species are happy for the alliance to proceed and Raksha is promised to Galen.
